If proprioception is an unfamiliar word, now may be a really good time to learn it. M. Night Shyamalan’s movie notwithstanding, proprioception is your 6th sense—not a giftedness of speaking with the dead. ;)

"Proprioception is your body’s ability to subconsciously sense its own position, movement, and orientation in space without needing to look,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.

After falling one-too-many-times, my father and I had a conversation about this. He mentions that he actively talks to himself: “I am now stepping up to a step, step, step, step.” In other words, he was saying that he can no longer trust just only his subconscious in monitoring spatial awareness.

Brain fog is a side effect of many of the medications I take to manage my Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia Syndrome.

My experience with proprioception

Recently, my sister and I grabbed lunch at a local garden, which highlighted my proprioception deficits. I spilled my drink. I dropped a fork on the floor. I didn’t respond well to the warping on my food tray. I forgot to get enough napkins. I dropped a piece of salad on my chest.

Jokingly, I often call myself a “klutz.” That word’s roots are Middle High German, ie, “Klotz,” referring to a wooden block. Which is how I often feel, when I have jerky, not-smooth movements. And from the Yiddish, it refers to “Klots,” with a similar meaning. Humorously, given that I have German and Jewish roots, I guess I come by it naturally. [Ooh, good question: from which heritage does my hypermobility come?]

Taking it to the next level

In a business context, the concept is useful at them macro level and the micro level. Where is your company, with respect to the industry? And where are you falling within the organization, with respect to your peers? How are you comparing to your comparables in other companies? Perhaps it's time for a proprioception assessment.
